Usage
Sikaflex®-591 is a multifunctional sealant designed for maritime applications. It is suitable for elastic and vibration-resistant joint sealings and can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications. Sikaflex®-591 adheres well to common substrates in the marine industry. Sikaflex®-591 in white is less suitable for teakwood applications. Sikaflex®-591 is not suitable for plastics that are sensitive to stress cracking, such as PMMA, PC, etc. This product is for use by experienced professionals only. Always perform tests on common substrates and under local conditions to verify adhesion and material compatibility.
Substrate Preparation
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from all traces of grease, oil, and dust.
Surface preparation depends on the nature of the substrate and is crucial for durable adhesion. Suggestions for surface preparation can be found in the latest edition of the Sika® Marine Pre-treatment Table. Please note that these recommendations are based on experience and must always be verified through testing on original substrates.
Application
Sikaflex®-591 can be applied between 5°C and 40°C, but changes in reaction and application properties should be considered within this range.
The optimal application temperature for substrate and product is between 15°C and 25°C. Sikaflex®-591 can be applied using a manual, pneumatic, or electrically powered adhesive gun with a piston.
If Sikaflex®-591 is used in combination with polyurethane adhesives or sealants, these must be fully cured for 24 hours before Sikaflex®-591 is applied.
Finishing and Smoothing
Finishing and smoothing should be done within the skin formation time of the sealant. We recommend using Sika® Tooling Agent N. Other finishing agents should be tested for suitability/compatibility.
Removal
Uncured Sikaflex®-591 can be removed from tools and equipment using Sika® Remover-208. Once cured, it can only be removed mechanically. Hands and uncovered skin should be cleaned as quickly as possible with Cleaning wipes or another suitable industrial hand cleaner and water. Do not use solvents on the skin.
Overpainting
Sikaflex®-591 can be overpainted after skin formation time. Optimal results are obtained when the sealant has fully cured. Adhesion can be improved by treating the joint surface with Sika® Aktivator-100 or Sika® Aktivator-205 before painting. Depending on the type of paint (e.g., 1-component paint based on turpentine or alkyd resin), plasticizer migration may occur, which may cause the painted surface to become sticky. All paints should be tested in accordance with the paint manufacturer's conditions. The elasticity of the paint system is lower than that of Sikaflex®-591, which may result in cracking of the paint layer.
